This Jack Nicklaus design, set on the scenic north-east coast of Phuket, offers you picture perfect breathtaking views out over the Andaman Sea on most of its beautifully manicured holes. Located only 10 minutes from the airport, you may want to make it your first stop when you arrive to this enchanting island. 

 

The island of Phuket has always been well known for its white sand beaches, turquoise waters, scuba diving and other water based activities, but it also boasts some spectacular championship golf courses and could easily be a golfers dream vacation spot. 

 

Mission Hills Phuket Golf Course and Spa with its Jack Nicklaus designed 18-hole par 72 course measuring 6,806 yards from the back tees is definitely one course that you will want to include during your visit. The course is literally set by the Andaman Sea, and with little elevation changes one can enjoy ocean views on nearly every hole.  With Nicklaus delivering his favorite mix of sand and water, this course with its well maintained Bermuda grass fairways and Paspalum Sea Isle greens, always offers you the gorgeous contrast of lush green, white sand, and turquoise blue as a backdrop. Make sure you don't leave your camera at the hotel as you definitely will want to capture the post card settings that present themselves time and time again. 

 

You can expect the same five star service of the resort to carry over to the golf course, as top level service and guest relations is prevalent everywhere. You are first greeted by a welcoming smile by the staff at the main entrance, which continues into the golf shop with the ever so pleasent ladies who can easily outfit you head to toe in the latest fashions while you are checking in for your tee time.  One of these attendants will then escort you to the locker facilities and introduce you to the locker attendant, and then waits for you and escorts you over to the well laid out practice facility where you meet your caddie for the day.  

 

Your caddie will start cleaning your clubs as you warm up on the well maintained range and her service never stops for the day.  She will be giving you yardages, correct reads on the greens (so trust her), cleaning your clubs, giving you lines of play, and offering you helpful local knowledge.  Carts are mandatory at this course, which is a shame because it would be a lovely easy walk, but with its relaxed atmosphere you can still take your time and enjoy the unspoiled views. 

 

The golf course has several large waste bunkers and with its close proximity to the sea and relatively open landscape, the winds can provide quite the challenge.  However, true to his design philosophy, Nicklaus gives the player generous landing areas in the fairways, large relatively flat greens, and four sets of tees to choose from, allowing all skill levels of golfers to have a truly enjoyable round.

 

You won't only remember the panoramic ocean views after playing here as many holes will stand out.  Some of my favorites were the par 3 fourth, the first of its ocean holes, which has a putting service consisting of an island of green surrounded by white sand. The following hole is a par 4 featuring an island tee and an island green.  One will not forget the 12th, a par 4 which plays a full 481 yards from the tips.  Two fantastic shots are required to reach the green in regulation which of course has water to the right for added pressure on the approach shot.  Bringing you home is the 18th, a medium length par 4 with water along the entire right hand side and the magnificent 5 star hotel as a backdrop behind the green.  

 

After putting out on the final hole, you may want to take advantage of a relaxing massage at the accompanying Maya Dhevi Spa, or enjoy a cold refreshing beverage on the patio at the clubhouses' Nibblers Restaurant and Patio Cafe.  Don't let the name fool you as this restaurant offers excellent Thai dishes such as steamed broccoli in oyster sauce or honey roasted duck. 

 

Mission Hills Phuket Golf Resort and Spa is a 10 minute drive from the airport and 30 minutes from Phuket Town or Patong Beach. With the ocean views on the golf course, 5 star hotel and accompanying spa, magnificent clubhouse and restaurant, this is definitely a place that should be on your itinerary while in Phuket.
