Montgomerie Links Vietnam

Situated between the city of Da Nang and the enchanting historical town of Hoi An, this award winning course designed by eight time European Tour Order of Merit winner, Ryder Cup star and winning captain Colin Montgomerie, offers locals and visitors alike a taste of links golf just off the beach of the East Sea on the Central Coast of Vietnam.

As you walk into the open air clubhouse which enjoys views looking out over the emerald fairways and eighteenth green, you'll find a nicely stocked golf shop offering the latest in merchandise and apparel.  Check in is a breeze, and you are given a locker for the day in the championship style locker rooms which offers both Western and Asian style showers to rinse away any bad shots before or after the round.

Walking out to the starting area, you are greeted by your caddie and asked to inspect your new Titleist rentals before heading over to the large range which offers covered hitting bays, a large practice green, chipping area and practice bunkers allowing you to  warm up all aspects of your game before the round.  The range is also home to the very hospitable and welcoming Darren Chapman, a certified PGA of Australia member who offers everything from junior clinics to private instruction or playing lessons to get your game in tip top shape.

Ready to conquer the course your caddie will take you to the first tee, and here you have the option of taking a golf cart or walk, a rarity these days.  I opted to walk which was a great choice as the course is a fantastic stroll and has only gentle elevation changes.  With its well manicured paspalum seaside grass weaving between sand dunes and native vegetation, Montgomerie Links Vietnam blends beautifully into the surrounding landscape and has a gorgeous natural feel.

The course is in excellent condition and really does have a natural feel as the bunkering is blended into the surrounding dunes and has native vegetation growing just outside the confines of the bunkers, giving you a feeling that the course has been around a lot longer than its age.  The best part of the course is this natural feeling as it does everything to enhance the landscape and does not have the man made feel that would take away from the scenery.

The design is one to be enjoyed by all skill levels, as the fairways are of decent size, the rough is kept fairly short, and features large rolling greens kept at a medium speed to aim at.  But don't be fooled if you are a low handicapper and take it to the back (Monty) tees, as with just over 7000 yards and a seaside breeze that can pick up at anytime, this course is one that still requires course management and concentration.

This links style course gently meanders its way between some sand dunes with a few very large ponds, making it a spectacular blend of links and parkland golf.  The fact that the sea is located just the other side of the street and there are no holes directly on the water does not take away from the beauty of the design. In fact, the buffer area between you and the sea seems to keep the winds to a very manageable level allowing you to play this links course without being forced to run the ball along the ground.

This 18-hole Par 72 Mongomerie design offers a great mix of holes from short, medium and long par fours to par threes that can see you hitting a wedge or 3 wood, and par fives that will have you and your caddie deciding if it is worth the risk to challenge getting home in two.  The course lends itself as a very fair challenge to enjoy during your vacation to Central Vietnam.

This great mix of holes seamlessly situated with a natural feel, and located just 20 minutes from either Da Nang city or Hoi An is a must play while visiting the area.  Da Nang features some beautiful beaches, but with courses like Montgomerie Links Vietnam waiting for you, you'll want to pack a little golf clothing with your bathing suits, flip flops and sunscreen.
