Red Mountain Golf Club
Built amidst a former tin-mine with dramatic elevation changes and a picturesque experience unmatched anywhere on the island, it doesn't take long to realise why this course measuring just under 7000 yards is rated the best course in Phuket and one of the top designs in Southeast Asia.
As you make your way up the long winding drive into the club from the main gates, you start to realise that this is going to be quite a spectacular round of golf. You are teased with glimpses of beautifully manicured fairways with large red cliffs framing the view along the way. You seem to keep going up and around until you arrive at the clubs parking lot, yet before you notice the magnificent clubhouse, your eyes are drawn to the view out over the range well below and find yourself taking in one of the best vistas you've seen on the island.
This incredible view is only the first of many waiting to greet you on this well crafted Jon Marrow design which is part of the MBK Golf Group. The golf course opened in 2008 to accompany Loch Palm, its shorter and more forgiving sister course just across the street. Since its opening, Red Mountain Golf Club has received almost every award for Thailand golf, and has become the must play while on the island.
From the parking lot, you make your way into the well appointed clubhouse which features everything you would need, including championship style members locker rooms, a restaurant with a mix of Thai and Western dishes with a view out over the 18th hole, and well stocked golf shop. You are greeted by the ever present smiles here on the "Island of Smiles" by the girls in the golf shop. If you require rental clubs, you are taken over to what looks like a past champions locker room with clubs on display, but in reality it is their rental options of tour sized bags with the latest equipment from many top manufactures. After you choose one, it will be waiting for you down in the staging area with your caddie.
After completing your check in at the golf shop and a quick change in the locker rooms ( which again featuring large windows from the back side overlooking another beautiful hole down below) you make your way down the stairs to the staging area. You are introduced to your caddie, and she takes you over to the range for a complimentary pyramid of balls.
Once you arrive at the first tee, you smile from the awe inspiring view in front of you with a meticulously manicured fairway and a wall of red cliff in the distance. This smile will not seem to leave your face for the other 17 holes, as despite how you play, the views and scenery keep bringing you back to a frame of happiness. The course meanders its way through tropical rain forests, mountainous backdrops, natural waste areas, deep ravines, and flooded gullies offering every vista that you would want to capture on film.
The golf course is famous for its hilly terrain, including the par 3 seventeenth with its green awaiting 150 feet below the tee. Yes, this is one course your happy to take a golf cart as it seems to rise and fall at every turn. Despite the hilly design, the course is very playable and there are no blind shots as the terrain drops away from the tees or gently rises to the greens. No billy goat golf here, just a well designed course with elevation changes.
Red Mountain offers a great mix of long and short par fours (two could even be drivable for the daring), medium length par threes, two of the par fives are reachable in two, and four sets of tees, which makes course manageable and enjoyable for any skill level. With slick bermuda greens which run pure and true and lush paspalum fairways, the course conditioning is what you would expect from one of the best on the island.
A round at Red Mountain will not be soon forgotten. Ample picture opportunities of lush green and red cliff backdrops with framing water hazards and perfectly placed white sand bunkers seem to present themselves everywhere, and will make you look like a professional photographer when showing off your pictures back home.
Located almost in the heart of Phuket, Red Mountain Golf Club is easily reachable from anywhere on the island, and is a short 15 minute drive from Phuket Town or Patong Beach area.
