Victoria Golf and Country Resort
This Donald Steel Championship design is a true hidden gem within the majestic hills of central Sri Lanka over looking the spectacular Victoria Dam and Knuckles Mountain Range. If you have a chance to play a round of golf while visiting this beautiful and diverse island, make sure you play this course which was featured as one of the 100 Most Beautiful courses in the World by Golf Digest.
During the 20km drive from the beautiful town of Kandy to the Victoria Golf and Country Resort you are surrounded by gorgeous views of the lush and tropical hills and find yourself wondering if the course is going to live up to the top 100 Most Beautiful courses rating by Golf Digest. As you pull into the incredible 500 acre resort and staring at the Knuckles Mountain range your hesitations are replaced with anticipation.
As you first see the well appointed clubhouse featuring championship style men and ladies locker rooms and the open air Araliya restaurant overlooking the 18th green, you become aware that you have arrived at a true country club lost within the mountains of Sri Lanka. The small yet nicely equipped PGA Golf Shop that can outfit all your needs is set outside the clubhouse just shy of the first tee.
After checking in and paying your fees, you are greeted by your smiling caddie and stroll over to the range area, which is a wonderful spectacle as the hitting area is perched well above the landing zone with the Mahaweli River serving as a back drop. Now that you are boosting with confidence from your towering drives from the elevated tee area towards the river you are more than ready for the course.
As you and your caddie head to the first tee, you become aware that you are walking to a course not like many others. You may have played some scenic courses, you may have played some beautiful courses, but the Victoria Golf and Country Resort will be in your list of spectacular courses.
This Donald Steel Par 73, 6933 yard Championship 18-hole golf course which made its debut in 1997 is majestically crafted with well maintained tree lined narrow fairways, flowering flaura and fauna, and light rough with draw dropping views of the Mahaweli River and Knuckles Mountain Range at every turn.
Make sure you bring your camera, as I am sure this will be one of the courses that guarantee you will be awestruck by its surroundings and you will take more shots with your camera than with your clubs.
You may think that the beauty cannot get better as you walk the first five holes, but then you are left breathless as you stand on the 6th tee with the fairway lying 100 feet below you. The course continues this undulated walk, but with the caddie carrying your clubs, the scenic walk does not seem tiresome.
The course is a championship design and although the fairways are narrow, the help from the light rough and the ball spotter appointed to your group will make this a memorable walk through the Sri Lankan hillside. You lose track of how many holes have award winning views over the river and Victoria Dam and the impressive mountains perfectly framing which seems every hole.
The round seems to end too quickly but the experience is not over. After a clean up in the championship style locker room, you can sit in the open air Araliya restaurant and enjoy a Lion beer and what could be the best seafood curry found in Sri Lanka.
The resort is complete with luxurious villas and chalets providing comfortable accommodation, a swimming pool to chill-out, tennis courts to play a set or two, horse riding to wander through the majestic country side and yoga to calm the mind before or after the round.
From beginning to end, the Victoria Golf and Country Resort is an experience not to be missed on any visit to Sri Lanka.
